Review: OCBC Rewards Card

The OCBC Rewards Card is a specialized card that earns 4 miles per dollar on a variety of categories.

However, it’s not a must-have if this is the first card you’re starting out with.

Introduction

The OCBC Rewards Card, formerly known as the OCBC Titanium Rewards Card, has had an interesting history. It was once a very popular card for shoppers, offering 4 miles per dollar (mpd) with an annual cap instead of the usual monthly cap. This allowed for large purchases that earn bonus points.

However, after a rebranding in 2024 and changing its annual bonus spending cap to a monthly cap, the reception from the public has been mixed.

Despite this, the OCBC Rewards Card can still be a valuable card for the right person.

Earning Miles

OCBC$ is the reward currency that you’ll earn from the OCBC Rewards Card.

It’s important to note that all OCBC$ are awarded for every S$5 spent on a single transaction.

  • Base Earn Rate: You earn 1 base OCBC$ for every S$1 spent on all eligible purchases.
  • Bonus Earn Rate: You receive an additional 9 OCBC$ (for a total of 10 OCBC$) for every S$1 spent on selected online and in-store retail categories. This is equivalent to 4 miles per dollar (mpd).
  • Promotional Earn Rate: Until 31 December 2025, you can earn an enhanced rate of 15 OCBC$ (equivalent to 6 air miles) for every S$1 spent at Watsons, Lazada, Shopee, and Taobao. The OCBC Rewards Card has seen regular promotions for upsized earn rates at various stores in the past few quarters.
  • Bonus Cap: You can earn up to 10,000 bonus OCBC$ (4,000 miles) a month. This is equivalent to a total spend of S$1,111 per month in the bonus categories. For spending on the categories that earn the promotional rate of 15 OCBC$, you can earn an additional 5,000 bonus OCBC$ a month.
  • Points Expiry: Points expire 24 months after they are earned.

Some of the popular stores in Singapore where you can earn the bonus rate include:

  • Department Stores: Takashimaya, Tangs, Isetan, OG
  • Fashion: Zara, H&M, Uniqlo, Love Bonito
  • Shoes: Charles & Keith, Bata, Foot Locker
  • Sporting Goods: Nike, Lululemon, Adidas, Decathlon
  • Online: Amazon, Lazada, Shopee, Taobao

OCBC Transfer Partners

You can transfer your OCBC$ to a variety of airline and hotel loyalty programs. A S$25 fee applies to each conversion.

Other than Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, IHG One Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy, you will be taking a haircut off your redemptions on other programs.

British Airways and Etihad Guest can be good transfer options if you’re able to find a good redemption for them.

Points Pooling

Points pooling is a feature that allows you to combine reward points from different credit cards into a single account for redemption. This can make it easier to accumulate points for a specific reward.

With OCBC, you can pool the OCBC$ earned from different OCBC credit cards, as long as you are the principal cardmember for all of them. However, it is important to note that you cannot combine OCBC$ with other OCBC reward currencies, such as 90°N Miles or VOYAGE Miles. These are treated as separate reward programs.

The only other OCBC card that earns OCBC$ is the OCBC Premier Visa Infinite Credit Card.

Verdict

The OCBC Rewards Card is designed for someone whose monthly spending is heavily concentrated in the card’s bonus categories, such as online shopping, department stores, and clothing. If you’re consistently hitting the monthly spending bonus on other credit cards, the OCBC Rewards Card can be a good option to increase your overall monthly bonus spending limits.

It’s also useful for someone who wants to diversify their frequent flyer programs beyond Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer, such as Flying Blue.

However, there are also banks that offer a wider variety of transfer partners, such as Citibank and HSBC, that offer cards with wider bonus spending categories.

Some cards that offer a lot of overlap in spending categories include the Citi Rewards Card and the HSBC Revolution Card. Therefore, if you already have those cards, it is a lot harder to recommend the OCBC Rewards Card.
